Most exam-prep products advertise the same things: thousands of questions, video lessons, a pass guarantee. Very few of those claims predict whether you will pass. Here is what actually separates useful prep from expensive prep.
This is the first question, not the last. A national question bank prepares you for one of the two sections you must pass. Ask specifically: how many questions are written for your state's license law, and are they maintained when the state changes a rule?
If a product cannot answer that clearly, it is a national bank with a thin state appendix.
A question you got wrong is worth more than ten you got right — but only if you learn why. Explanations should say why the correct answer is correct and why the attractive wrong answer is wrong. Anything less trains recognition, not understanding.
Sitting a hundred questions under time is a different skill from answering ten. Pacing, fatigue and the discipline not to re-read every question are things you can only train by simulating the real thing. A product with only short quizzes leaves that untested.
This is where most tools quietly mislead. Raw accuracy — questions right divided by questions answered — rewards you for practising only what you already know. A topic you have never opened simply does not count against you, so avoiding your weakest area raises your score.
A defensible readiness estimate counts every category, weights your weakest one heavily, treats untouched topics as unknown rather than fine, and scores the national and state portions separately. If the number cannot tell you which half of the exam is weaker, it cannot tell you when to book.
Many products sell access windows — a week, a month, a year. If you postpone your exam date, which is extremely common, you pay again. Check whether access expires before you compare prices.
Pick the tool that drills you actively, covers your state seriously, simulates the real exam at full length, and tells you the truth about where you stand. Then use it daily. Consistency beats any feature list.
